The apple of discord thrown by Luther into the Roman window did not only lodge itself in the Vatican; it rolled into the living rooms of ordinary believers. There is, in the work of the TCA team, a peculiar, almost medieval rigor that recalls the workshops of the early cathedrals. There, as here, nothing begins with a mere line on paper, but with the patient investigation of the problem itself: the field in which the building will arise is not simply measured, but questioned – as if it were a witness, carrying in its landscape, its history, and its silences the answers we seek.
Yet the decisive step – and here TCA differs from the more impatient ateliers of our time – is the first physical grasp of the material: the working model.
From the outset, several models emerge in parallel, each in a different scale. This is not excess, but method: the 1:500 scale speaks of urban forces; the 1:100 reveals spatial proportions; the 1:20 has already begun to tell of surfaces, shadows, of the touch of a hand. And so these objects are not merely built, but interrogated, rotated, dismantled – day and night, often in silence, sometimes in the heat of a dispute that resembles a philosophical colloquium more than an architect’s meeting.
Each of these nights leaves traces. Not in the coffee on the table or the dust on the cutting mat, but in the deepened understanding of the building mass. The design does not grow linearly, but like a palimpsest: each layer bearing the scars and revelations of the one before.
The Guggenheim project in Helsinki shows this working method in its purest form. Here, urban and spatial meanings intertwined into a dense textile skin that wrapped itself around the building mass like a carefully woven coat.

There are places that seem to be mere passages: entrances, gates, canopies, zones of control. And yet it is precisely at these thresholds that the drama of the public and the private, of inside and outside, of arrival and departure, unfolds. In Bursa, before a monumental marketplace where streams of people and goods flow each day, such a place is being reimagined.
TCA conceives of this threshold not as a mere functional detail but as an architectural metaphor. The gate is not simply a checkpoint, not merely a security barrier against disorder, but a stage: it welcomes and it bids farewell, it illuminates and becomes a sign itself.
The response to this challenge is an elliptical disc, hovering, almost weightless. It rests upon slender steel columns, raised like fingers pointing toward the sky. At night, it shines — radiant like an artificial moon, a symbol of vigilance and a promise of protection. By day, it slices through the air with knife-like precision, separating inside from outside, yet never rendering that separation absolute: for every boundary is also a connection.
Thus, the canopy becomes not only a physical barrier but also an event of light and shadow. Whoever enters feels the dignity of the space; whoever departs experiences the ritual of farewell. The invisible — surveillance, order, security — merges with the visible — form, materiality, radiance — to create an architecture of attention.

One must sometimes remind oneself that the tower, as it emerges from the fairy tales and chronicles of the Middle Ages, was never merely a structure but always a promise: the promise of seeing farther than the eye can reach and knowing more than humans are meant to know. Perhaps this explains our insatiable desire to erect towers that touch the sky, even though we have long since bid farewell to the gods.

A tower rising 350 meters into the air — a construction so bold it inevitably conjures up Babel — is not merely a matter of concrete, steel, and statics. It is a semiotic monument. For what does height mean if not the longing for oversight, for distance from the everyday, for that godlike perspective that allows us to recognize the world as a pattern?

Yet this tower is not only meant to satisfy human curiosity, that same curiosity which, as with medieval city wall towers, gazed out to spot enemies or storms in time. No — here, two desires converge: the archaic desire for a view and the modern thirst for the invisible.

But more than that: this tower must not only be a technical marvel but also a stage for the gaze. From 350 meters up, the world looks different. Street patterns become ornaments, houses shrink to miniatures, people blur into dots, scarcely distinguishable from birds. Thus languages were born — the first borders, not of land, but of the mind.
Later, as Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote in one of his unbearable yet lucid sentences, someone took four stakes, drove them into the ground, and said: “This belongs to me.”
And the others, instead of laughing, believed him.
Yet wherever boundaries are drawn, bridges also arise.
A place that is both here and elsewhere — an architectural paradox, a symbol of the simultaneity of distance and proximity.
In Berlin, a city shaped by the dialectic of division and reunion, the Turkish Embassy holds a particular significance.
It is not merely a diplomatic residence but a translation — a translation of history, culture, and tectonic language into the stone and landscape of another country.
The TCA Design Team sought here to articulate the unspeakable — to create an architecture that does not simply speak but suggests.
The forms, materials, and landscapes of Turkey were deconstructed, analyzed, and recomposed.
From the tectonic language of Anatolia, a new syntax emerged: spaces that carry meaning, just as words carry memory.
The public areas unfold like a dialogue — transparent, welcoming — while the diplomatic, protected zones retreat inward, listening to themselves like a second heart.
For what is diplomacy, if not the art of speaking between borders, without crossing them?
And what is architecture, if not the art of making such invisible relations visible?
Thus the embassy becomes more than a building — it becomes a thought in stone,
reminding us that ever since man began to measure the earth, he has still been searching for a place where he might truly arrive.

There are institutions that merely administer, and there are those that remember. TARİŞ belongs to that rare category that does both at once: it organizes the market while preserving a memory. A memory of the earth, of hands, and of time.
The cooperative is not, in essence, a modern invention. Rather, it is the re-emergence of an ancient principle: the direct relationship between producer and community, long before intermediaries came to dominate exchange.
The design for the administrative building of TARİŞ in Izmir therefore faces a paradoxical task: how does one administer something that is, by nature, not abstract but profoundly physical? How does one design a place for decisions, numbers, and contracts when their true origin lies in the soil?
Tuncer Cakmakli Architects respond not with symbols, but with a spatial gesture of almost archaic clarity: the earth itself becomes the building.
A fragment of land is raised from the ground, creating space beneath—space for administration, exchange, and the intellectual labor that allows what is made by hand to reach the world.
The metaphor is clear, yet not loud: just as the farmer works the soil to transform a seed into sustenance, administration works information, logistics, and markets to transform labor into meaning and value. Both are acts of cultivation.
In this building, architecture itself becomes a cooperative. It mediates between hand and mind, between ground and global market, between past and future. It reminds us that the farmer’s greatest asset is not the product, but the soil itself—a gift of nature that can endure only through responsible care.
Perhaps the quiet radicality of this design lies precisely here: it asserts that even in a globalized economy, everything begins with the earth. And that any form of administration that forgets this will, sooner or later, lose the ground beneath its feet.

Street patterns become ornaments, houses shrink to miniatures, people blur into dots, scarcely distinguishable from birds. Perhaps it is this perspective that reminds us we live in patterns and structures we only recognize when we detach ourselves from them. A tower of such height is a philosophical instrument — it compels us to renegotiate our relationship with the earth and the sky.

Thus the tower becomes a semiotic node: a sign of power, progress, communication — and at the same time a symbol of the eternal fragility of human hubris.

In the end, it is probably thus: we build these towers because we know they will one day fall again. But for a moment, for a generation, they grant us the illusion that we can escape the things that bind us to the ground. A tower is never merely stone, steel, or glass — it is a thought woven from light and height.

The Earth has given humankind a place to live, to wander, to think.
And man, unable to grasp this gift in its wholeness, began to divide it.
He drew lines where once there were only horizons; he cast nets of words over the silence of nature.
Thus languages were born — the first borders, not of land, but of the mind.
Later, as Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote in one of his unbearable yet lucid sentences, someone took four stakes, drove them into the ground, and said: “This belongs to me.”
And the others, instead of laughing, believed him.
Yet wherever boundaries are drawn, bridges also arise.
A place that is both here and elsewhere — an architectural paradox, a symbol of the simultaneity of distance and proximity.
In Berlin, a city shaped by the dialectic of division and reunion, the Turkish Embassy holds a particular significance.
It is not merely a diplomatic residence but a translation — a translation of history, culture, and tectonic language into the stone and landscape of another country.
The TCA Design Team sought here to articulate the unspeakable — to create an architecture that does not simply speak but suggests.
The forms, materials, and landscapes of Turkey were deconstructed, analyzed, and recomposed.
From the tectonic language of Anatolia, a new syntax emerged: spaces that carry meaning, just as words carry memory.
The public areas unfold like a dialogue — transparent, welcoming — while the diplomatic, protected zones retreat inward, listening to themselves like a second heart.
For what is diplomacy, if not the art of speaking between borders, without crossing them?
And what is architecture, if not the art of making such invisible relations visible?
Thus the embassy becomes more than a building — it becomes a thought in stone,
reminding us that ever since man began to measure the earth, he has still been searching for a place where he might truly arrive.

Tariş Administration Building
There are institutions that merely administer, and there are those that remember. TARİŞ belongs to that rare category that does both at once: it organizes the market while preserving a memory. A memory of the earth, of hands, and of time.
The cooperative is not, in essence, a modern invention. Rather, it is the re-emergence of an ancient principle: the direct relationship between producer and community, long before intermediaries came to dominate exchange.
The design for the administrative building of TARİŞ in Izmir therefore faces a paradoxical task: how does one administer something that is, by nature, not abstract but profoundly physical? How does one design a place for decisions, numbers, and contracts when their true origin lies in the soil?
Tuncer Cakmakli Architects respond not with symbols, but with a spatial gesture of almost archaic clarity: the earth itself becomes the building.
A fragment of land is raised from the ground, creating space beneath—space for administration, exchange, and the intellectual labor that allows what is made by hand to reach the world.
The metaphor is clear, yet not loud: just as the farmer works the soil to transform a seed into sustenance, administration works information, logistics, and markets to transform labor into meaning and value. Both are acts of cultivation.
In this building, architecture itself becomes a cooperative. It mediates between hand and mind, between ground and global market, between past and future. It reminds us that the farmer’s greatest asset is not the product, but the soil itself—a gift of nature that can endure only through responsible care.
Perhaps the quiet radicality of this design lies precisely here: it asserts that even in a globalized economy, everything begins with the earth. And that any form of administration that forgets this will, sooner or later, lose the ground beneath its feet.
Here, however, the earth remains present—not as an image, but as weight, as shelter, as origin.
And therein lies its dignity.
