The Wetland Biotop Ecosystem Conservation and Expansion Project of the Izmit Gulf is being implemented on the Izmit Coast, one of the critical stops along the bird migration route between the continents of Europe and Africa. In the region, 151 different bird species can be observed, with particularly endangered species such as the Dikkuyruk and Küçük Karabatak being protected under the Bern Convention.
The main objective of this project is to provide suitable accommodation and feeding conditions for birds undertaking mandatory migration, ensuring that their migration journeys are completed with minimal loss. The Izmit Gulf Wetland Area is one of the crucial stops on the bird migration route between Europe and Africa, constituting an ecologically significant area of international importance.
Ecological Design and Important Wetland Areas: This project aims to provide a rational means of understanding the global environment and our natural surroundings by monitoring birds and populations as indicators of a healthy environment through important bird areas. The conservation strategy for species, habitats, and ecosystems takes precedence in the project.
Current Basin Status and Water Management: The project addresses issues arising from increased water demand and the deterioration of wetland areas, focusing on central water management. The goal is to reduce the gap between water demand and the amount of water that can be supplied.
Objectives and Recommendations:
• Protection of the Sapanca Basin for the re-designing of the ecosystem.
• Reconstruction of the ecosystem parallel to current urban life.
• Ecological corridors established between Sapanca Lake and the gulf aim to sustain the basin and agricultural areas.
• Drawing attention to environmental issues related to Kocaeli’s rapid urban development and ensuring balanced urban development.
Problems and Findings:
• Izmit, which is at the center of major metropolises, faces environmental problems due to industrial development and population growth.
• Urban development and environmental pollution contribute to the degradation of the natural environment.
• Risks associated with the preservation of the natural habitat, Izmit Gulf.
Urban Ecosystem and Biological Diversity:
• The Izmit Gulf Wetland Area contributes to biological diversity by providing a suitable habitat and feeding environment for migratory birds.
• The ecological system of Izmir Gulf is strengthened through biotope islands, aiming to restore the ecosystem.
• Biotopes, through the transformation of the water zone into an ecotone, undertake the role of a buffer zone in the transition to the urban ecosystem.
This project aims to emphasize the importance of preserving natural life, sustainable urban development, and ecosystem health by aiming to protect and expand the Izmit Gulf Wetland Area in harmony with the biotope ecosystem.
