A Building That Carries Itself – On a Floating Architecture in Zonguldak

There are places where matter begins to speak for itself. Not merely as material, but as a sign, a symbol, a narrative that writes itself across space and time. In Zonguldak, a city on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, such a sign has emerged—a new headquarters building for one of the region’s largest steel pipe manufacturers. But this is no ordinary building. It is an allegory in steel, a floating story of industrial poetry.
Imagine: the offices and meeting rooms of the company’s general directorate are not anchored to the ground—they are suspended in the air. Not supported by concrete or glass, but by the very thing the company produces: steel pipes. These pipes, usually hidden within the bones of infrastructure, here become the protagonists.
The industry lifts itself into the air. It is as if the product frees itself from its function and steps into a new semantic realm—transforming from utilitarian matter into a metaphor of lightness. The weight of steel dissolves in the symbolic gesture of weightlessness. One might say: the building floats because the idea behind it floats.
This structure does not merely make use of leftover materials—it transforms them. Waste becomes meaning, function becomes form, and material becomes message. The steel pipes carry the building just as the labor of those who shape them carries the company.
But what does it mean to float?
In an age where management is often isolated from the world—trapped in glass boxes above urban skylines—this building proposes a new kind of transparency. Not through glass, but through elevation. The headquarters does not look down—it looks outward. Across the production halls, across the terrain, and out toward the open sea. Work is no longer confined to artificial light but invigorated by the sea breeze.
Such a building is no silent object. It is a text. And like any text in the semiotic sense, it is open to interpretation—polysemous, ambiguous, perhaps even unsettling, but deeply human.
And what is a floating office building if not a manifesto of that very gesture?

Since humanity first began to reflect upon its own existence, the search for faith has accompanied it as an inseparable companion. The unknown, the inexplicable, and the awareness of our own mortality urged human beings to seek a form of inner equilibrium—one they often believed could be found in faith. Across millennia, different religious paths emerged, yet all of them—despite their variety—sought to offer the same promise: inner peace.
And if Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey stands today as one of the earliest known expressions of sacred yearning, it reveals something remarkable: that human beings, regardless of the form their beliefs took, were bound together by the same questions, the same fears, and the same hopes.
Yet the paradox remains: although humans are equal before God, history is marked by countless wars waged in God’s name. Boundaries have been drawn, sacrifices demanded—and still demanded—though life on Earth is only a brief gift allotted to each of us. The joy of living together should be a shared experience, not a battleground. Humanity’s inability to understand the roots of this inner discord is one of its oldest tragedies; the primordial tale of Cain and Abel shows how jealousy, the desire for possession, and intolerance toward the Other were woven into the early fabric of our consciousness.

“Space”

Architecture does not begin with stone.
It begins with an emptiness… that dares to imagine itself.
A boundary is not always a wall.
It can be a shadow, a breath, a frame of wood that closes nothing,
yet defines everything.
Without limits, there is no space.
Without space, no form.
Without form… no meaning.
And yet – every limit is also a threshold.
It divides, in order to unite.
It turns a passage into a belonging.
In the Swiss Consular building,
a loop of wooden frames connects rooms without locking them in.
No absolute endings.
Only lines, pauses, invitations.
Space speaks to the mind,
but it also listens to the heart.
It asks you not only to enter,
but to find yourself –
in the room, in the others, in your own story.
Because space is not where life happens.
Space is what makes life possible.

_____________________________  “Mekân”  Mimarlık taşla başlamaz. Kendini hayal etmeye cesaret eden bir boşlukla başlar.  Bir sınır her zaman duvar değildir. Bazen bir gölge, bir nefes, hiçbir şeyi kapatmayan ama her şeyi tanımlayan bir ahşap çerçevedir.  Sınır olmadan mekân olmaz. Mekân olmadan form olmaz. Form olmadan… anlam olmaz.  Ve yine de – her sınır aynı zamanda bir eştir. Ayırır, ama birleştirmek için. Geçişi, aidiyete dönüştürür.  İsviçre Konsolosluk binasında ahşap çerçevelerin sonsuz döngüsü, mekânları birbirine bağlar ama onları asla kapatmaz. Ne mutlak sonlar vardır ne de kesin kopuşlar. Sadece çizgiler, duraklar, davetler…  Mekân zihne konuşur ama kalbi de dinler. Senden yalnızca içeri girmeni istemez, kendini bulmanı ister – odada, başkalarında, kendi hikâyende.  Çünkü mekân, hayatın olduğu yer değildir. Mekân, hayatı mümkün kılan şeydir.

When one understands the city as a text — a premise not unfamiliar to semiology — then landscape design, too, must be read as a kind of palimpsestic annotation: a new layer of meaning inscribed upon old signs without erasing them.
The disused railway line stretching 8,500 meters from Sirkeci to Yedikule is not merely a corridor of tracks and sleepers; it is a resonant space of history. Once, this line cut through the city’s urban fabric, connecting the waters of the Marmara shore with the inner organs of the metropolis, carrying goods, people, rumors, and ideas. Today, this linear space is being rewritten by TCA as an Art Line: a landscape park that touches the old Byzantine city walls and brings them into dialogue with contemporary urban life.
What emerges here is more than a green belt; it is a poetic infrastructure for collective nourishment — not only in the literal sense, but also as artistic sustenance for the city’s inhabitants. Just as the agora or the medieval marketplace once functioned as sites of exchange, this park is envisioned as a porosity within the city, an open stage where nature, art, and urban memory weave a new narrative.
TCA’s working method follows a principle: to uncover the essential, to interpret the hidden layers. The large-scale models are not merely aids for form-finding but three-dimensional commentaries — plastic essays that open up spaces of meaning. They make it possible to design the landscape not as a mere ornament but as the syntax of a new urban legibility.
By connecting the railway line with the shore of the Sea of Marmara, a threshold space emerges: a transition between water and city wall, past and present, nature and artifice. The Byzantine walls — once a bulwark against intruders — are not cordoned off as museum relics but interwoven into the landscape as narrative fragments. Thus, the past is not conserved like a dead exhibit but breathes on within the new urban fabric.

When one contemplates TCA’s design for the Mediapark Cologne, one steps into an urban narrative that submits neither entirely to the myth of the industrial city nor to that of a futuristic media utopia. Rather, it unfolds as a palimpsest: layer upon layer of urban memories, dreams, and signs overlay each other.
It is telling — and surely no coincidence — that the architects have committed themselves to the idea of building a “new media city within the city.” It asks: how many subtexts can the urban syntax bear without losing itself?
The street axes of the Mediapark frame the cubic structures like words in a sentence. The recording and production studios disappear, half-buried in the earth — almost like medieval crypts, where no longer saints but sounds, images, and data streams lie in wait: the relics of the digital age.
The logic of the horizontal — office buildings stretching long and low — finds its counterpoint in the vertical towers. These rise like modern campaniles into the sky, charging the city with new significance. It is no coincidence that they evoke Cologne Cathedral, that Gothic hyper-sign that has shaped the city’s skyline for centuries, its spires a perpetual exclamation mark. The new towers of the Mediapark do not wish to compete but to quote, to echo, an ironic reference to the power of the vertical in the city’s horizon.
But what would such a place be without its landscape? The Mediapark’s parkland, so the plans promise, is to be shaped by hand. Here too lies a subtle irony: the handmade, the organic form, the wide meadows, water biotopes, and tree-lined avenues stand in contrast to the digital content generated beneath.
Thus, the Mediapark Cologne is more than a functional condensation of offices, studios, and park. It is, if you will, an urban sign laboratory, a semiotic cosmos in which the city itself becomes a medium.
And whoever strolls here does not merely wander through a green oasis, but through a city that quotes itself — like a medieval manuscript in whose marginalia new stories have long been waiting.

Architecture is never merely the act of erecting walls, placing beams, stacking stone or concrete. Architecture is – if one dares say – a double gesture: it creates space and at the same time body. The space we enter, that surrounds us, is never empty. It is infused with meanings, with codes inscribed within it. The body we see – the building as a figure in the urban landscape – is not only form, but also bearer of this invisible semantics.
Yet this meaning is not born solely in the act of construction. It is born through use. The worker, the visitor, the wanderer – all of them, through their movements and actions, inscribe a text into architecture. Architecture is thus not only an object, but also a discourse.
In the urban fabric, this means: every building is embedded within a network of relations. The street that surrounds it, the neighboring structure, the invisible threshold between public and private space – all these are semantic markers.
Humans recognize architecture through codes. Some are immediately legible: a door that invites or excludes; a staircase pointing upwards; a square promising community. Others are hidden, almost esoteric: proportions that generate harmony; the guidance of light that suggests transcendence; material layers that tell stories. It is these hidden codes that enrich human experience, because they suggest more than they reveal.
This is where the approach of TCA takes root: every design is a newborn, a new text inscribed into cultural discourse. Not as a repetition of old patterns, but as a constant re-formation, an attempt to reinterpret the codes of space and body, and at the same time to make them accessible. Architecture emerges where space is not only used, but also read and understood – and where the human being, amid signs and meanings, finds a fragment of their own well-being.

One must sometimes remind oneself that the tower, as it emerges from the fairy tales and chronicles of the Middle Ages, was never merely a structure but always a promise: the promise of seeing farther than the eye can reach and knowing more than humans are meant to know. Perhaps this explains our insatiable desire to erect towers that touch the sky, even though we have long since bid farewell to the gods.
A tower rising 350 meters into the air — a construction so bold it inevitably conjures up Babel — is not merely a matter of concrete, steel, and statics. It is a semiotic monument. For what does height mean if not the longing for oversight, for distance from the everyday, for that godlike perspective that allows us to recognize the world as a pattern?
Yet this tower is not only meant to satisfy human curiosity, that same curiosity which, as with medieval city wall towers, gazed out to spot enemies or storms in time.
Think of the Eiffel Tower, that iron colossus so heavy and so delicate at once, that in its time it seemed like a paradox — a promise of a future in which matter would be forced to serve the mind.
But more than that: this tower must not only be a technical marvel but also a stage for the gaze. From 350 meters up, the world looks different. Street patterns become ornaments, houses shrink to miniatures, people blur into dots, scarcely distinguishable from birds. Perhaps it is this perspective that reminds us we live in patterns and structures we only recognize when we detach ourselves from them. A tower of such height is a philosophical instrument — it compels us to renegotiate our relationship with the earth and the sky.
Thus the tower becomes a semiotic node: a sign of power, progress, communication — and at the same time a symbol of the eternal fragility of human hubris.
In the end, it is probably thus: we build these towers because we know they will one day fall again. But for a moment, for a generation, they grant us the illusion that we can escape the things that bind us to the ground.

Before the first light kisses the asphalt, heavy trucks arrive, their refrigerated compartments filled with the night’s haul. The cold rooms are cabins, the balconies command bridges. From above, one sees not just the fish but the entire social web that circles around it. It is like peering into the depths of an ocean from the deck of a ship: the market itself becomes a sea.
Perhaps this is the secret of such places: they are not mere halls, not bare functional buildings. They are ships that never set sail. They remain stranded at the city’s edge, yet every night they embark again — with fish, with language, with people bargaining between desire and necessity. And like all ships, they carry the longing that somewhere beyond the horizon, a better catch awaits.

One could say that TCA did not simply build here—they researched. They searched for that fragile balance between presence and restraint, between creation and nature. A palimpsest of architecture, landscape, stillness, and intellect.
And the guest? They are not merely a visitor here. They are the final interpreter.
