Opera, Art and Culture Center İzmir

Positioned between İzmir’s city park and its harbour, this proposal imagines the cultural centre not as an object placed within the landscape, but as the landscape itself rising toward the sea.
A continuous green carpet extends from the park, folds over the building and forms a new public ground for walking, gathering and performance. Beneath this inhabited topography, opera, theatre, exhibition and rehearsal spaces are brought together within a flexible cultural structure. An open-air amphitheatre connects the life of the building to the waterfront, allowing performances to move between interior and exterior, architecture and city.
The project’s central gesture is the transformation of the roof into public space—a cultural landscape where park, harbour and performance become part of one continuous urban experience.

TCA – On the Birth of Space from Thought TCA de

TCA – On the Birth of Space from Thought

TCA designs do not arise from the whim of form, but from a patient archaeology of thought. Before a line is drawn, there is a question. And this question is not superficial, but sedimentary—layer upon layer it moves through meanings, functions, memories, and expectations until it touches that invisible core from which space can be born.

Space here is not a neutral container. It is a hypothesis about life. Every function—dwelling, healing, learning, encountering—seeks its form the way a word seeks its sentence. Yet this search is not immediate. It requires a code. Not merely in the technical sense, but as a system of signs, as a grammar of possibilities.

Just as in semiotics every sign emerges through difference, space too emerges through boundary. A wall is not merely separation; it is articulation. An opening is not merely passage; it is promise. The design thus becomes an act of translation: thoughts are transformed into lines, lines into planes, planes into structures. Point to line. Line to plane. Plane to structure.

TCA understands this process as a form of research. It is not the quick answer that is sought, but the precise question. What boundary does life require in order to unfold? Where does function end and meaning begin? Space arises precisely at this threshold—where the practical becomes symbolic and the symbolic becomes practical.

“Space within space” in this thinking is not a decorative motif, but a semantic condensation. One space contains another, just as a text contains its subtext. Interior spaces become commentaries on exterior spaces; structures become commentaries on movement; light becomes a discourse on time. Architecture thus becomes a readable order—a text deciphered by the body as it moves through it.

The Paradox of Structures One could say that a sp

The Paradox of Structures

One could say that a sports hall is not simply a space where bodies move, but a space where forces take shape. What we are dealing with here is not merely a building, but a dialogue between two structures that must never intersect and yet are bound to carry a common load. A paradoxical alliance, almost like two languages that do not overlap, yet compose a single poem.

The first structure—the backbone of the hall—carries, as tradition dictates, the vertical load. It behaves like a serious scholastic, quoting gravity in his treatises to bind it into calm order. But suspended above this solemn system hangs a second order: the network of sporting equipment. This network is not stable in the classical sense.

Architecture is compelled to embrace both logics: the static calm of the hall and the dynamic unrest of the equipment. It is as if two opposing philosophies must be reconciled—Aristotle, who orders being, and Heraclitus, who acknowledges the flux of things. And yet, the hall insists that both be true at once.

Detailing—where iron bends, where a bolt tightens, where a suspension absorbs shock—is no mere technical gesture. It becomes the hermeneutics of forces. Every joint is a footnote in the grand commentary of statics. Every connection point is a metaphor, reminding us that architecture is not only walls and roofs, but the translation of invisible energies into a legible form.

Thus, the sports hall becomes a palimpsest of forces: the hall’s structure writes the great, calm narrative of gravity; the structure of the equipment adds the lively, trembling marginalia. Between the two arises that tension which constitutes the essence of architecture: the union of the irreconcilable, the balance of opposites, the design that emerges from the load itself.

And when the visitor, unknowingly, enters the space, he feels harmony, not conflict. He sees lines, planes, heights. Yet behind this vision lies a silent dialectic: an architecture that gives space not only to bodies, but elevates forces themselves into form.

Architecture, Trust, and the Fragility of Creative

Architecture, Trust, and the Fragility of Creative Work
Architecture is far more than the arrangement of walls, ceilings, and windows; it is the foundation of our human civilization, the visible expression of culture, dreams, and the ambitions of a society. It reflects not only functional necessities but also the subtle longings for aesthetics, harmony, and meaning. After the division of labor—where the architect, supported by education and experience, orchestrates the multitude of services—a special relationship emerges: that between architect and client, formed from trust, respect, and the shared vision of a building.
This trust is based on knowledge of the best possible execution—functional, economical, and unique in design. It is trust in the abilities of a team that works tirelessly, penetrating every sketch, model, and calculation, to transform the client’s vision into reality. In these hours, nights, and days of dedication, not only professionalism manifests itself, but also a quiet devotion to the very idea of building.
The presentation of designs to the client, accompanied by their high enthusiasm and amazement, is the moment when the idea comes alive. Here begins the detailed planning, carried by the fairly compensated work of the architect team, nurtured by the recognition and support that keeps creativity alive.

THE BUILDING BLOCK AND THE VOID The new YTONG Head

THE BUILDING BLOCK AND THE VOID
The new YTONG Headquarters in Istanbul translates the identity of one of Xella’s most significant building materials directly into architecture. A clear, monolithic volume stands in the urban landscape like an oversized building block. Yet its true meaning emerges from what is taken away from it: the void.
A courtyard is carved from the centre of the block, becoming a shared space for life and work around which administration, marketing and development are organized. Visual connections, terraces and galleries bring people together, transforming the office building into a small community — a city within the block.
Towards the outside, the building remains calm, precise and tectonic. It does not imitate YTONG; it embodies its principle:
The stone forms the body.
The void creates the space.
The human being gives meaning to both.

A TOWER FOR SIGHT AND THE INVISIBLE One must some

A TOWER FOR SIGHT AND THE INVISIBLE

One must sometimes remind oneself that the tower, as it emerges from the fairy tales and chronicles of the Middle Ages, was never merely a structure but always a promise: the promise of seeing farther than the eye can reach and knowing more than humans are meant to know. Perhaps this explains our insatiable desire to erect towers that touch the sky, even though we have long since bid farewell to the gods.

A tower rising 350 meters into the air — a construction so bold it inevitably conjures up Babel — is not merely a matter of concrete, steel, and statics. It is a semiotic monument. For what does height mean if not the longing for oversight, for distance from the everyday, for that godlike perspective that allows us to recognize the world as a pattern?

Yet this tower is not only meant to satisfy human curiosity, that same curiosity which, as with medieval city wall towers, gazed out to spot enemies or storms in time. No — here, two desires converge: the archaic desire for a view and the modern thirst for the invisible.

But more than that: this tower must not only be a technical marvel but also a stage for the gaze. From 350 meters up, the world looks different. Street patterns become ornaments, houses shrink to miniatures, people blur into dots, scarcely distinguishable from birds. Perhaps it is this perspective that reminds us we live in patterns and structures we only recognize when we detach ourselves from them. A tower of such height is a philosophical instrument — it compels us to renegotiate our relationship with the earth and the sky.

Thus the tower becomes a semiotic node: a sign of power, progress, communication — and at the same time a symbol of the eternal fragility of human hubris.

In the end, it is probably thus: we build these towers because we know they will one day fall again. But for a moment, for a generation, they grant us the illusion that we can escape the things that bind us to the ground. A tower is never merely stone, steel, or glass — it is a thought woven from light and height.

Tariş Administration Building There are instituti

Tariş Administration Building
There are institutions that merely administer, and there are those that remember. TARİŞ belongs to that rare category that does both at once: it organizes the market while preserving a memory. A memory of the earth, of hands, and of time.
The cooperative is not, in essence, a modern invention. Rather, it is the re-emergence of an ancient principle: the direct relationship between producer and community, long before intermediaries came to dominate exchange.
The design for the administrative building of TARİŞ in Izmir therefore faces a paradoxical task: how does one administer something that is, by nature, not abstract but profoundly physical? How does one design a place for decisions, numbers, and contracts when their true origin lies in the soil?
Tuncer Cakmakli Architects respond not with symbols, but with a spatial gesture of almost archaic clarity: the earth itself becomes the building.
A fragment of land is raised from the ground, creating space beneath—space for administration, exchange, and the intellectual labor that allows what is made by hand to reach the world.
The metaphor is clear, yet not loud: just as the farmer works the soil to transform a seed into sustenance, administration works information, logistics, and markets to transform labor into meaning and value. Both are acts of cultivation.
In this building, architecture itself becomes a cooperative. It mediates between hand and mind, between ground and global market, between past and future. It reminds us that the farmer’s greatest asset is not the product, but the soil itself—a gift of nature that can endure only through responsible care.
Perhaps the quiet radicality of this design lies precisely here: it asserts that even in a globalized economy, everything begins with the earth. And that any form of administration that forgets this will, sooner or later, lose the ground beneath its feet.
Here, however, the earth remains present—not as an image, but as weight, as shelter, as origin.
And therein lies its dignity.

The Threshold — The First Language of Architectu

The Threshold — The First Language of Architecture
A threshold is more than a boundary. It is the moment where one world becomes another.
We do not simply inhabit spaces—we experience the transitions between them. Every threshold transforms movement into meaning, guiding us from the city to nature, from the familiar to the unknown.
For TCA, the entrances to Istanbul’s waterfront promenade were never conceived as gates, but as architectural signs—places that translate arrival into experience and space into memory.
Architecture does not create space. Space already exists.
Architecture gives space meaning.
