Residence Emirgan

The house was built in reinforced concrete construction in the seventies. The task was the enlargement of the attic and the complete renovation of the interior. The building structure and the plan were preserved. The external door, internal doors, staircase, paving and furniture were redesigned and renewed the diversity of design in the usage of timber was shown to the fullest extent.

The characteristics of the material could be observed in every detail of the artful carpentary work the function, the feeling, the touch, and the appearance should be realized with a clear understanding of the material and a harmonious combination of proportions. The idea behind the design of the garage door with its steel frame was formed through a synthesis of burmese and cubic art. The horizontal and the vertical sections together compose a visual effect.

The garden door of oak is the treshold to the private sphere. The whole opening is framed. The solid double door, 75 mm thick in three plies and in the plane with a twisted fibre direction all laminated together and with ball bearing, determines the strong transition from outside to inside. The chance to view the outside world or the coming visitors is achieved through small openings.

The oak steps which are resting on steel plates are unfolding from top to bottom.

Solid oak internal doors have individual designs for different rooms. The fibre structure and the identity of each door. The enlarged attic which has a bosphorus view is veneered with various kinds of timber like a cave in the core of a tree.

Each piece of furniture which is specially designed to match the individual needs is made of veneered chipboard.
