QAZVIN – Rediscovering the Caravanserai of the Twenty-First Century
Cities are not built solely from stone. They are built from memory, from journeys, and from the countless stories of those who pass through them. Qazvin is one of those rare places whose identity has always been defined less by its walls than by its position within history.
For centuries, Qazvin has served as the gateway between central and northwestern Iran. Situated along the historic north–south route connecting Tehran and Tabriz, the city was never merely a stop on a road; it became one of Persia’s great crossroads of commerce, knowledge, and spirituality. During the Seljuk era, magnificent bazaars, mosques, madrasas, caravanserais, and civic buildings transformed Qazvin into one of the most influential urban centers of the Iranian plateau. These monuments remain today as silent witnesses to a civilization in which architecture was never simply about shelter, but about communication, encounter, and cultural identity.
Today, Qazvin continues this legacy. Home to one of Iran’s most respected universities, it remains a vibrant city where history and contemporary life coexist in continuous dialogue.
Our site occupies a strategic position directly along this historic artery. The project therefore is conceived not merely as a hotel combined with a shopping mall, but as a contemporary reinterpretation of the Persian caravanserai—a place where travelers find rest, residents discover an urban destination, and commerce becomes a social experience.
The design is rooted in the spatial philosophy of Persian architecture. Ornament is not treated as decoration or historical quotation; instead, it becomes an architectural language. Traditional geometric patterns are transformed into a contemporary system that organizes façades, roofs, public spaces, and interiors alike. Vertical and horizontal layers interact to create a continuous dialogue between light and shadow, openness and enclosure, movement and permanence. Ornament thus regains its original role—not as embellishment, but as the generator of space itself.
At the heart of the complex lies an open commercial street inspired by the historic Persian bazaar. Retail, cafés, restaurants, cultural venues, and public gathering spaces are woven together into an urban environment that remains active throughout the day and well into the evening. Rather than functioning as an enclosed shopping mall, the project extends the life of the city itself, dissolving the traditional boundary between architecture and public space.
The horizontally composed building follows the movement of the historic trade route, accompanying the traveler while embracing the urban fabric of Qazvin. Rising from this horizontal composition, the hotel tower acts as the project’s vertical landmark. It stabilizes the ensemble, provides orientation, and establishes a memorable skyline. Between the expansive horizontality of the bazaar and the calm verticality of the hotel emerges an architectural balance—a dialogue between movement and arrival, between journey and destination.
This project therefore seeks not to imitate history, but to continue it. It translates the spatial intelligence of Persian architecture into a contemporary architectural language, allowing Qazvin’s centuries-old tradition of hospitality, commerce, and cultural exchange to find a new expression for the twenty-first century.
QAZVİN – Yirmi Birinci Yüzyılın Kervansarayını Yeniden Düşünmek
Kentler yalnızca taştan inşa edilmez. Onları var eden, bellek, yolculuklar ve içlerinden geçen insanların bıraktığı hikâyelerdir. Qazvin, kimliğini surlarından çok tarih içindeki konumundan alan ender şehirlerden biridir.
Yüzyıllar boyunca Tahran ile Tebriz arasındaki tarihî kuzey–güney ticaret aksı üzerinde yer alan Qazvin, yalnızca bir geçiş noktası değil; ticaretin, bilginin ve kültürel etkileşimin en önemli merkezlerinden biri olmuştur. Özellikle Selçuklu döneminde gelişen çarşıları, medreseleri, camileri, kervansarayları ve kamusal yapıları, İran kent kültürünün en güçlü örneklerinden birini oluşturmuştur. Bu yapılar bugün hâlâ, mimarlığın yalnızca barınak değil; karşılaşmanın, iletişimin ve ortak belleğin mekânı olduğunu anlatmaktadır.
Bugün de Qazvin bu tarihsel kimliğini korumaktadır. İran’ın en önemli üniversitelerinden birine ev sahipliği yapan kent, geçmiş ile geleceğin aynı mekânda buluştuğu canlı bir kültür ve eğitim merkezidir.
Proje alanımız, bu tarihî ulaşım aksı üzerinde stratejik bir konuma sahiptir. Bu nedenle tasarım, yalnızca bir otel ve alışveriş merkezi olarak değil; Pers kervansarayı geleneğinin çağdaş bir yorumu olarak ele alınmıştır. Amaç, yolcular için dinlenme ve konaklama sağlayan; Qazvin halkı için ise günün her saati yaşayan yeni bir kentsel odak oluşturmaktır.
Tasarımın çıkış noktası, Pers mimarisinin mekânsal anlayışıdır. Tarihî süsleme dili yalnızca dekoratif bir unsur olarak kullanılmamış; çağdaş mimarinin mekân kurucu ilkesi hâline dönüştürülmüştür. Geleneksel geometrik desenler, cepheleri, çatıları, iç mekânları ve kamusal alanları biçimlendiren yeni bir mimari sistem olarak yeniden yorumlanmıştır. Böylece ışık ile gölge, açıklık ile kapalılık, yataylık ile düşeylik arasında sürekli değişen zengin bir mekânsal deneyim ortaya çıkmaktadır. Süsleme yeniden anlam kazanmakta; mekânın kurucu öğesine dönüşmektedir.
Kompleksin merkezinde yer alan açık ticaret sokağı, tarihî Pers çarşılarından esinlenmiştir. Mağazalar, kafeler, restoranlar, sosyal ve kültürel mekânlar tek bir kamusal omurga üzerinde birleşerek günün her saatinde yaşayan bir kent mekânı oluşturur. Böylece alışveriş merkezi, kapalı bir yapı olmaktan çıkar; kentin doğal uzantısı hâline gelir.
Yatay doğrultuda uzanan yapı kütlesi, tarihî ticaret yolunun hareketini izler ve ziyaretçiyi yapının içine davet eder. Bu güçlü yatay kompozisyon, yükselen otel kulesiyle dengelenmektedir. Düşey eleman, yapıya yön duygusu kazandırırken aynı zamanda Qazvin siluetinde yeni bir odak noktası oluşturur. Çarşının yatay sürekliliği ile otelin düşey vurgusu arasında kurulan denge, yolculuk ile varış, hareket ile dinginlik arasında mimari bir diyalog yaratmaktadır.
Bu proje geçmişi kopyalamayı değil, onu sürdürmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Pers mimarisinin zamansız mekânsal ilkelerini çağdaş bir mimarlık diliyle yeniden yorumlayarak Qazvin’in yüzyıllardır süregelen misafirperverlik, ticaret ve kültürel etkileşim geleneğini yirmi birinci yüzyıla taşımaktadır.
