House Baden Baden
GERMANY
Schwarzwald forms the most robust forest flora in Germany. The region’s nature and structural characteristics have given rise to a distinctive timber architecture. The functional spatial organization and the mastery of wooden construction have preserved their existence for centuries. Baden-Baden, situated within Schwarzwald, has developed as Germany’s foremost wellness and cultural center, renowned for its thermal baths and attracting people from all over the world as an upscale living hub.
Traditional Schwarzwald houses, shaped by the region’s climate and living conditions, evolved as wooden structures where humans and animals coexisted, primarily for agricultural purposes.
The new structure intended to be placed in nature aims to preserve the environment while introducing new perceptions shaped by current knowledge and experience.
Designed to be a plus-energy home, it incorporates all technological and structural innovations to create a sustainable spatial organization.
The bedrooms are semi-submerged in the ground, while the living room, dining area, and workspace form one large volume above ground. This main space is enveloped by an infinite connection created through a wooden structure. The wooden structure serves as the primary horizontal and vertical load-bearing and connective element.
The sun not only provides light but also becomes the structure’s fundamental energy source, generating all the energy needs of the house while even producing surplus energy.
The house’s orientation allows it to host sunlight from dawn to dusk. It facilitates natural heating during seasonal transitions and generates electricity through energy conversion units placed on the roof.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are embedded into the ground, framed by massive walls. The living space, the core of life, extends from floor to ceiling with expansive glass surfaces.
The homeowners, urban and modern individuals with demanding careers, desired an energy-efficient home where they could unwind and raise their family. In Baden Baden, they envisioned a Schwarzwald timber house on a hillside plot with breathtaking views, immersed in nature, and entrusted us to design their dream home.
